The Tegral group, based in Athy, Co. Kildare comprises Tegral Building Products and Tegral Metal Forming. Tegral Metal Forming is a manufacturer and distributor of metal roofing, cladding and flooring systems for the construction sector. The manufacturing process comprises metal forming and profiling using metal roll-forming and metal pressing machinery. The company employs 70 people.
The product range is made up of building systems for both the building envelope and the building structure.
With regards the building envelope the TMF range includes:
These systems comprised profiled metal cladding sheeting and liner sheeting separated by a spacer bar. The cavity between the sheeting is filled with mineral wool or alternative insulation to create external walls to the required Building Regulations (Part L) standard on commercial and industrial buildings. The key benefit of these systems is that the insulation is not fixed to the metal sheeting and therefore the system is fully recyclable and easy to recycle at the end of the building’s useful life.
Tegral Metal Forming also imports and distributes Insurer approved and certified Trisomet and Trimapanel insulated composite roof-panels. Composite panels are made by inserting the insulation between the metal sheets in the factory thereby reducing the labour on-site. Recent research carried out by Corus and the School of Architecture at Oxford Brookes University has found that approximately 30% of energy loss in a building is accounted for by air permeability. Improving air-tightness therefore is a much more efficient means of achieving energy reductions than simply piling on extra insulation. As a result, our range of insulated panels are designed with a new joint-lock system to offer improved air-tightness and hence improved overall energy efficiency of the building in the UK confirms that, once adequate insulation has been achieved, improving air-tightness is a more efficient means of improving overall thermal performance of a building. In addition to Trisomet and Trimapanel, Tegral Metal Forming also offer Enviropanel® which is also a composite panel but recyclable mineral wool is used as the insulation medium instead of the standard PIR (polyisocyanurate) insulation used in most other composite panels.
A more recent addition to the range includes Solarwall™ which is a metal solar cladding system specifically designed to reduce carbon emissions from buildings. What is unique about Solarwall™ is that it has a payback for new buildings of less than 3 years and for retro-fit the payback is also extremely attractive at between 5 and 7 years.
The SolarWall™ Metal Solar Cladding System (also known as the Transpired Solar Collector) heats external air via a southerly facing solar collector. The system consists of a dark steel or aluminium profiled sheet that is perforated to allow air to pass through its surface into a pre-determined cavity. The Solarwall sheet is fitted over the standard Tegral built-up or composite panel wall cladding. As the air passes through the perforated wall it absorbs the walls warmth.
The warm air rises within the cavity to the top of the wall from where it is drawn into the building via a ventilation fan delivering free, fresh, heated air into the building. No gas, and minimal electricity is required hence significant reductions in CO2 can be gained, delivering true, economical, socially responsible, environmentally friendly heating.
During the warmer summer months the SolarWall™ collector acts as a ‘sun screen’, shading the building from direct solar gain, significantly reducing convective heat gains through the wall. The heated air captured within the cavity is then naturally exhausted away from the building and fresh ambient air can be drawn inside through a summer by-pass damper.
The concept was first developed in the early 1980’s but due to the low cost of energy, motivation to invest in the technology was minimal. As the product has evolved and with the upsurge in energy costs and global warming issues, demand for the product has increased significantly.
On a recently completed and tested project in the UK using 1211m2 of Solarwall™ total average annual energy savings are estimated to be 299,000kWh & 71tonnes of CO2.
Tegral Metal Forming Roofing & Cladding Systems use pre-finished steel supplied by steelmaker, Corus in the UK. In association with Corus, Tegral Metal Forming Limited now offer designers the chance to design the World’s first CarbonNeutral Building Envelope with Corus Confidex SustainTM . Corus Confidex Sustain™ is a carbon offsetting scheme which means for every 1kg of CO2 emitted by the pre-finished steel, cladding, fixings and insulation, Corus will offset 1kg in climate friendly projects overseas. These have a social as well as environmental benefit with investment in renewable energy and energy efficiency projects in various locations worldwide. Confidex Sustain™ covers the whole cladding system, from the pre-finished steel used for the inner and outer sheets, to the fixings, insulation and spacer system if required.
Tegral Metal Forming Insulated panels and Built-Up Roofing and Cladding Systems offer proven thermal performance to provide the required thermal efficiency over the lifetime of the building. Now, in addition to providing energy efficient building envelopes, Tegral’s systems have been assessed to verify their composition and carbon emissions, and this information has been published in individual environmental product declarations, providing a summary of the environmental impacts from cradle to grave.
Extended 40 Year Maintenance Free Guarantee with Colorcoat HPS200® Ultra from Corus
All of Tegral’s roofing and cladding products come with the option of an extended Confidex® maintenance and inspection free guarantee of up to 40 years on roof and walls when specified with colorcoat HPS200® Ultra from Corus. This revolutionary new coating system offering twice the colour and gloss performance of other plastisols and is Eco designed to remove environmentally harmful elements and deliver lowest impact, providing the most sustainable pre-finished steel solution.
In addition to supplying products for the building envelope, Tegral Metal Forming manufacture structural construction products including:
The Tegral metal Forming roof deck range is designed for maximum efficiency and have superior load span and load bearing capacities on flat roofs. The roof deck can be used with all membranes in built-up roofing and or as support to various pitched roof systems. Tegral roof deck is also available with perforations for improved acoustic protection.
Of course, these are just some of the steps that Tegral Metal Forming and their supply partner Corus are taking towards upholding the principles of sustainability. Corus is a major partner in ULCOS (ultra low CO2 steelmaking) a €44 million European research project to investigate technologies that could substantially reduce CO2 emissions in the steelmaking process. This group is looking at a number of potential breakthrough technologies such as recycling blast furnace gas, CO2 capture and sequestration, electrolyis, use of hydrogen as a reductant and utilisation of biomass.
With this range of products it is not surprising that Tegral Metal Forming are involved in some of the largest and most prestigious construction projects in Ireland including The Pavillions Shopping Centre, Swords, County Dublin and The Helix, Dublin City University both of which employed Tegral Metal Roof Decking.
